How to Play (Instructions)
- 1
Spot the Pattern
The Raven IQ Test is a classic visual reasoning game where you must discover hidden rules or principles within a sequence of shapes or symbols and determine the correct figure that comes next.
- 2
Rules
A series of three or four shapes is displayed on the screen, following a specific underlying rule (such as rotation, color changes, increases or decreases in quantity, or shifts in position). You must decipher this rule and select the correct shape from the given options.
- 3
Problem Variations
The patterns of change vary widely, involving factors such as shape, color, position, and orientation. As you progress, multiple rules may be combined, and the level of abstraction increases, requiring more advanced reasoning skills.
Cognitive Functions You Will Train
Sharpening Reasoning and Abstraction Skills
This game effectively hones reasoning skills—the ability to logically derive rules from given information—and abstraction skills—the ability to extract universal patterns from concrete shapes—by challenging players to discover hidden regularities within sequences of shapes or symbols and determine the correct next element. The process of seeking a solution while simultaneously considering complex patterns formed by a combination of elements (such as shape, color, position, and orientation) also engages working memory (the ability to temporarily hold and compare multiple changing rules) and spatial awareness (the ability to mentally visualize the rotation or movement of shapes). As the puzzles increase in abstraction, the game demands flexible thinking—the ability to view problems from new perspectives without being bound by preconceived notions. These cognitive functions are primarily associated with the prefrontal cortex and the parietal lobe; engaging in repeated challenges can lead to improvements in logical thinking and problem-solving abilities in everyday life.
Other Recommended Brain Training
Memory Match
This is a training exercise in which you memorize a sequence of shapes or symbols as they appear one after another, and then accurately reproduce the last two or three items.
Block Memory
This is a training exercise in which you memorize the colors and positions of the cards and find all the matching-color pairs.
